The work describes the divisions of contemporary and traditional solid wood constructions. The introduction briefly explains the historical development of timber structures and the advantages that these structures provide. Individual structural systems are described according to the basic elements and usage possibilities. The requirements for the massive wooden houses are listed in the form of technical standards and laws that have to meet.

This paper deals with the basics of the so-called “Massive Timber Construction“ (MTC) system. The paper is focused to the design of MTC system (mainly design of floors, shear walls and connections) which is made from the relatively new wood-based product “Cross Laminated Timber” (CLT). CLT consists of several layers built-up with boards. Their assembly in orthogonal directions allow them to produce elements with big dimensions. Currently, no regulations for the design of CLT-elements are given in the European standards. Nevertheless mechanical parameters of CLT-elements can be determined on the basis of the properties of the single layers as is shown in the paper. It is expected that CLT will play an important role in the future use of wood in single and multi-storey buildings.

The article deals with sound insulation of wooden house constructions, including the national requirements for sound insulation of walls. There is also a brief description of the laboratory measurement of the sound insulation of wall constructions and information about the sound insulation of single and double wood-based structures.

The paper presented method of laboratory measurements for specifies air permeability of building board elements of wood- based. The aim of laboratory measurements was to designate value of air permeability of building board elements of wood- based. The results from measurement are in form protocols which indicate air permeability for differential pressure 50 Pa. The value air permeability decides about application and quality building board elements for airtight layer.

Turbulent but often incompetent discussions about more stringent building-energy requirements are accompanied by calculations proving - often biased - what is needed. The article deals with the problem of reliability of building-energy calculations, especially when combined with financial evaluation. The stochastic calculation of energy performance of a large sample of buildings is used. Costs increase of low-energy solutions is discussed.

Change of the standard ČSN 73 0810/Z1 (valid from  1st June 2012) introduces a new term - so-called „equivalent DP1“.This represented an exception in the classification of non-combustible components for some products. This exception was cancelled by the Change ČSN 73 0810/Z3 valid from 1st July 2013.

Forestry and forest management plays many roles in the landscape and in the socio-economic area. Forests represent a landscape stabilizer, the best preserved part of the landscape of predominantly natural character with significant application of natural, spontaneous process. It also serves as a source of material benefits to human society. The wood-producing function of forests was questuioned in this country in recent years. Above all, leaders of various environmentalist movement are demanding ever greater proportion of forests without economic activity. However, forestry is afflicted by such influences by decades and the aim of this paper is to demonstrate possible implications of these trends for forestry and subsequent economic sectors.

It has been one year and a half since Technical Standards Information TNI 74 6077 – The windows and external doors – Requirements for incorporation has been published. What is the consistency or inconsistency between the demands on windows and doors manufacturing, their installation and actually reached geometrical tolerances of building construction? What this state brings to manufacturers of windows and doors, what to building contractor and what to customers? The view through the eyes of quality control.

Wood is an organic material and therefore often considered to have a short lifetime. However, in the past, people did not distinguish between durability of wood and durability of masonry, proof of which is the existence of constructions that combine the use of both. In fact, the lifetime of wood can be high if specific rules are followed when designing the construction.

This paper presents an analysis of the behaviour of wood when using the diagnostic tool for "in-situ" assessment of wood based on the principle of mechanical resistance to penetration tool (mandrel) into the wood. The aim was to describe the degree of deformation and failure mode during penetration (diameter 2.5 mm) into wood in a purely radial direction and to compare the tool with a standard measurement unit testing on samples.

The paper deals with structural and humidity survey of the timber-framed building of Rowing Centre from the 19th century in Brno. The building is one of the last surviving buildings of its kind in the city. The results of the survey of wooden structures, including windows, doors, and other construction, can be summed up in a statement that the construction is in relatively good condition adequate to its age. Proposal of preventive and remedial actions aims at maintaining of the traditional timber-framed system with the supporting structure visible from the outside.

Cross laminated timber is likely to happen in the near future, the most important product in solid wood construction in residential and high-rise construction. Depending on the size of the used components and their mutual orientation can produce a wide range of products. The third part deals with selected projects.

Development of wooden buildings in the Czech Republic is based on the requirement to implement the most low-energy buildings. Still there are many people who are afraid of wooden buildings mainly because of their misconceptions about their behaviour under fire. But the truth is that in a fire wood doesn’t lose its rigidity and strength, and the remaining sections of wood elements are also able to carry the load.

The paper includes conclusions from evaluation of results obtained from long-term measuring of innovative types of timber structures. Based on the results of measurements of vertical and horizontal deformation components it is possible to analyze the real behaviour of structures in given conditions. By assessing deformations in various stages, including particularly external and internal environment temperatures, relative air humidity and moisture content of wood, decisive parameters for real structure behaviour can be established.

The fire behavior of wood is very predictable phenomenon. Using the simplified computational methods it can be determined the bearing and separating function of structures. The bar-shaped load-bearing elements is a parameter R (resistance and stability) for PCB - vertical and horizontal structures for the threshold criteria R, E, I, (capacity, integrity, insulation). In many cases it is very difficult and according to Eurocode 5 (1-2) almost impossible to determine the start time charring timber under fire protection and fire protection violation time.

At present, it is not easy to find the optimum variant of the energy used for heating, which would be suitable for all types of houses. Economic evaluation of basic options which are offered should be enough for the choice of method of heating. The article gives an example of the selection of appropriate options for heating and hot water of selected house by comparing the technical, economic and geographical possibilities of nine basic and commonly used variants in the Czech Republic.
